 Drafting of EU legislation: a view from the European Commission

 

 

 

EU legislation must be drafted in such a way that it can be applied in all 27 Member States. Another particular feature with major implications for the drafting process is that it exists in 23 language versions, all of which are equally authentic.

Rules on languages

Article 290 of the EC Treaty provides:
The rules governing the languages of the institutions … shall … be determined by the Council, acting unanimously.
