 Developmental state in Brazil: past, present and future

The study analyses developmental state in Brazil using historical and institutional approach within the framework of development economics. The study is in four parts. The first part is a brief theoretical introduction, which discusses and defines developmental state itself and presents the classic model of developmental state and the newer trends, characteristics of a re-considered developmental state. These two concepts serve as a benchmark to analyse the role of the state in fostering socio-economic development in Brazil. In the next section a historical overview of the Brazilian developmental state is presented. Third part of the study aims to discuss the present situation in Brazil, it analyses to what extent the Brazilian state can be considered as developmental state and what results have been achieved. In the last part we draw our conclusions, and highlight some open questions... (segue)
