A Member State of the European Union since 2004, the Republic of Malta is currently the smallest European country in terms of both population and surface area, despite being one of the world’s most densely populated states. In fact, Malta is a small archipelago between Italy, Tunisia and Libya optimally located in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea.
