 30 years of South African history: from the negotiations on the independence of Namibia to the Marikana “Massacre” Interview with Dave Steward, President of the FW de Klerk Foundation

David Whitefoord Steward was born on 23 May 1945 and educated in Canada, England and South Africa. He served in the Department of Foreign Affairs between 1966 and 1985 in Canberra, Ottawa and at the United Nations where he was Ambassador from 1981-1982. Between 1983 and 1985 he was involved in negotiations on the independence of Namibia. Mr Steward was Head of the South African Communication Service from 1985 until 1992. In August 1992 he was appointed Chief Government Spokesman and in November, Director-General in the Office of President F W de Klerk. He retired from public service in October 1996 and in 1999 co-authored F W de Klerk’s “The Last Trek, a New Beginning”. Steward and the former President de Klerk established the FW de Klerk Foundation in June 1999 and its Centre for Constitutional Rights in 2006. He has served as the Foundation’s Executive Director since its establishment. Federalismi.it interviewed Mr Steward, who offered from his unique perspective an in-depth analysis of the current economical and social situation of his country. Most importantly, we were able to learn more about South African past and present events directly from a person who contributed to the solution of the crises which mark the history of the country, in such a way as to prevent the outbreak of a civil war, allow the adoption of a Constitution and lay the foundations for a pacific settlement of disputes...
